Bronzer Masterclass

Master the tricky art of bronzer and look sunkissed whatever the weather.

Guilty of a heavy hand or simply scared stiff of bronzer? Go back to beauty school with Rimmel make up artist Kirstin Piggott's simple step-by-step guide to getting the most from your bronzing powder.

Bronzer is a summer staple, the skin-friendly way to enhance a sunkissed glow. "We all love to have that gorgeous holiday sunkissed skin. By wearing bronzer you can achieve a healthy radiant glow all year round without exposing your skin to sun damage," says Kirstin, who explains how to use bronzer – without looking tangoed.

Bronzing masterclass

Step one: Pick the right shade

When choosing your bronzer, go for a shade that isn't too dark for your skin tone; I would recommend one or two shades darker. Go for either a gorgeous terracotta, bronze, copper, cocoa or caramel shade. For the most natural results, use two different shades of bronzer, one slightly darker than the other. You can keep your look more natural by going with the lighter shade for your day look and pump it up with the darker shade for the evening.

Step two: Prep skin for a smooth finish

For the best results, and to make the application of the bronzer smoother and more even, make sure you prep the skin first with your usual moisturiser and foundation.

Step three: Prime your tools

Using a blusher brush, dust over the lighter shade of bronzer. Blow off any excess powder first, to ensure the application isn't too heavy.

Step four: Know where to apply

Smile so that you can locate the apple of your cheek. Apply here and sweep the brush backwards on to the cheekbone, blending up to the temples and lightly sweeping on to the forehead and chin; this brings the face together.

Step five: Finish using the darker shade

Now take your brush and dust over the darker shade of your bronzer, again patting off any excess powder first.

Smile to find the apple of your cheek and lightly apply here, gently blending outwards. This extra pop of colour on the cheek gives a really healthy glow and a more natural, sunkissed result.

Step six: Blend, blend, blend

Always blend well to ensure that the skin looks naturally sunkissed. Voila! Your gorgeous new bronzed look.
