When I'm shopping for insect repellents, I keep hearing about DEET. What is it?

DEET is the most commonly recommended repellent for malaria areas and was originally developed for the US army. It has been in general use for nearly 50 years.

It is often used in higher concentrations than other repellents. The Repel Tropical Strength range contains up to 50% DEET, which is the amount recommended by the UK Health Protection Agency when going to high risk malaria areas.

It does have disadvantages: the two most common being that it has quite a strong smell and that it can melt some plastics, for example sunglasses.

DEET is considered very safe when applied in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines.*** Use Insect Repellents Safely. Always read the label and product information before use.

For further information on the safety of DEET, refer to the Health Protection Agency website which contains a lot of useful information on repellents.

How to apply insect repellents

  • Before applying your Repel, always read the instructions on the pack
  • You should apply just enough of the product to cover all exposed skin
  • Don't apply a spray directly to your face; spray onto your hands and then rub into your face avoiding contact with eyes and lips
  • For best results when using sunscreen, apply the sunscreen first and allow to fully dry before applying the insect repellent
  • Some insect species become more active at dusk, so apply your repellent in the day and evening.

How often to apply insect repellents

See individual packs for re-application guidance. However, you may need to reapply more often for example in humid conditions, after swimming, or if you notice insects starting to bite again.

I don't want to keep reapplying a repellent. Is there a product that will last all day?

One application of our Once ranges protects effectively for up to eight hours. Use Insect Repellents Safely. Always read the label and product information before use.
