Ever wondered how much work goes into getting the perfect cover shot? We joined the Boots Health & Beauty magazine team behind the scenes on the shoot for the March/April issue cover...

The idea: ‘It’s our spring cover, a time when we start getting excited about the new season. We wanted to capture how we all feel on that first really warm day of the year,’ says Health & Beauty art director Darren Siveter.

Where: A downtown Manhattan warehouse studio overlooking the Hudson river.

The photographer: Fernando Milani, a Brazilian photographer based in New York, whose credits include beauty shoots for Marie-Claire, Elle and InStyle as well as ad campaigns.

The model: ‘We wanted a natural, fresh, radiant girl,’ says Acting Beauty Editor Emma Calder. ‘After a hectic casting, Monique, a German model living in New York, really stood out. She’s striking with beautiful skin but she still looks like the girl next door.’

Getting ready: Monique arrived at 9am on the day of the shoot and the make-up artist, Lucky (who was making up designer Donna Karan for a party straight after the shoot) started working on her eyes straight away. Meanwhile, a manicurist buffed up Monique’s nails as her hands were in shot. ‘Attention to detail is vital on a cover shoot,’ Emma explains.

Hair: Monique’s hair was kept natural with soft, loose waves.

The clothes: An embroidered, white, sleeveless blouse was chosen for the cover shot. ‘You actually don’t see much of what a model’s wearing on a cover but this top blended in with the light background,’ says Emma.

The result: A cover shot that reflects radiance, natural beauty and a real feeling of spring.
