Mum Shanta from Harrow says: ‘I’d love a confidence boost. I haven’t had a hair cut in 15 years, and I suppose I’ve just become used to how I look. I’m happy with it but Minal says I need a new look. I want to look good for my age.’
Daughter Minal, 30, says: ‘Mum does everything for everyone, but puts herself last. I want her to feel good about herself and put herself first for a change. She’s stuck in a style rut too so I can’t wait to see her new look ’
Caroline Barnes is an international make-up artist, with famous clients including Kylie Minogue, Sophie Ellis Bextor and the Sugababes.
How Caroline got the look:
1. ‘Shanta has five or so tones in her skin. The trick was to match the lightest as darker tones can make the skin look muddy.’
2. ‘Adding light brightens eyes, so a wash of bronze over her lids, followed by a lighter shade on the inner corner, really woke them up. Shanta has never worn mascara so we built up the coats slowly and applied just to her top lashes.’
3. ‘To bring out her cheekbones, I used Max Factor Flawless Perfection Blush in Natural Glow, and some bronzer to enhance the effect. Finally, Max Factor Lipfinity in Reflective Ruby is the perfect shade for Shanta’s lips, as it gives lips an invigorating wash of colour.’
Quick tips that work for you
• To even skin tone, try a light-reflecting concealer.
• To brighten eyes, dab a shimmery shadow at the inner corners or your eyes.
Steal Shanta’s fab new look with these beauty must-haves
1. Give hair extra body with Denman Medium Thermo-Ceramic Self-Grip Rollers. There’s no need for clips and pins.
2. Estee Lauder Illusionist Maximum Curling Mascara (available instore) is perfect for giving defining eyes for darker skins.
3. YSL Mosaic Sun Powder Palette Bronzer gives all skin types a sunny glow.
Celebrity hairstylist Mark Hill has styled the hair of numerous celebrities including Fearne Cotton, Myleene Klass, Holly Willoughby and Kym Marsh.
How Mark got the look:
1. ‘The first thing I did was whisk away Shanta’s stray ends, creating a blunter shape. A spritz of Mark Hill De-Frizz Shine & Control Spray at the roots ensures her hair is more pliable for styling as well as adding volume.’
2. ‘I’m a big believer in rollers as they give fine hair volume, body and lift. With Shanta, I placed them up the back and sides of her head and along the parting.’
3. ‘Finally, using my fingers, I teased her hair into shape, adding a drop of serum to add lustre to the ends, without weighing her hair down.’
Shanta says: ‘I feel great. No-one has ever shown me how to do my make-up before, but now that I can see the results, I’ll be applying it every morning.’
