To celebrate Mother’s Day we took two women and gave them an expert makeover with celebrity hairstylist Mark Hill and make-up artist Caroline Barnes.

Mum Mandy Anslow, 58, from Colchester says: ‘I’ve been wearing the same make-up for years, but I’ve always been too nervous to try something new. I was so excited on the way here this morning.’

Daughter Emily, 25, says: ‘Mum is amazing. She’s inspired me to take opportunities in my own life and to always be willing to give things a go. I think she always looks great but I know she’ll love having her hair done by Mark Hill.’

The make-up

Caroline Barnes is an international make-up artist, with famous clients including Kylie Minogue, Sophie Ellis Bextor and the Sugababes.

How Caroline got the look:

1. ‘The first thing I did was to tidy Mandy’s brows, giving her face an instant lift.’

2. ‘Next, I moisturised her skin, letting it absorb, before applying Max Factor Miracle Touch Foundation under the eyes and over any blemishes, followed by a mineral foundation, which is perfect for Mandy’s sensitive skin as it’s free from potentially irritating preservatives.’

3. ‘Blusher is important as we age, as we tend to lose colour. I used a creamy blush, applying on the apples of her cheeks to create a youthful flush. A light dusting of bronzer helped set the make-up.’

4. ‘For striking eyes, I applied a dark brown eyeshadow over her lid and blended lightly past the outer corners. By increasing the surface area, it helps to make the eyes look bigger. A few coats of lash-boosting mascara helped to widen eyes even further.’

5. ‘The final touch was Max Factor Lipfinity in Charming, which includes a balm, essential for lips that are dry like Mandy’s.’

The hair

Celebrity hairstylist Mark Hill has tended the hair of numerous celebrities including Fearne Cotton, Myleene Klass, Holly Willoughby and Kym Marsh.

How Mark got the look:

1. ‘Mandy’s hair was too heavy around the bottom, and looked harsh against her square jawline, so softening the style at the sides with layers made her hair instantly appear more elegant. Before blow-drying, I applied Mark Hill Straightening Balm to help smooth down her hair’s cuticles and make blow-drying easier.’

2. ‘I dried her hair in sections using a round barrel brush, working from the nape of her neck up to the crown, then on both sides. Getting lift at the crown is an important part of styling.’

3. ‘If your hair goes flat quickly, like Mandy’s, you need to get the brush right into the roots around that area. Also, directing the flow of air in the direction the hair is going will flatten the cuticles to help make it smooth and shiny too.’
