Foil effect nail art

A metallic manicure is set to be a huge trend this autumn/winter, so we show you how to create this eye-catching foil nail art effect with super simple techniques - perfect for parties!

1

After buffing, apply a base coat

Buffing your nails helps to keep the nail free of ridges for a smooth finish and gives your nail polish a better surface to 'stick' to, so it should last longer. Apply a thin coat of base coat to protect your nail from staining and increase staying power.

2

Paint your nails with two coats of gold

Paint two coats of reflective foil nail polish in even strokes. Don't worry if you can see the brush strokes, this is the nature of a foil polish and adds an exciting brushed metal effect.

3

Seal with a topcoat

Nail artist top tip: Before beginning any nail art, add a coat of topcoat to seal the base. Once completely dry, this gives you a more even surface to work on and any mistakes can be quickly wiped away with a cotton bud, without smudging your base colour. Genius!

4

Once dry, apply a piece of tape in a horizontal stripe

Cut a strip of translucent tape half a centimetre wide and place it across the top third of your nail, near the tip. Press gently on the edges so it is secured all the way along. Repeat on all your nails.

5

Paint your whole nail silver

Working on one nail at a time, paint a coat of silver foil polish, as you usually would, over the top of the tape.

6

Remove the tape while the polish is still wet

Immediately after you've finished painting, remove the tape in a swift, horizontal motion to reveal a gold stripe underneath. Repeat on all your nails.

7

Clean up around the edges

Dip an angled brush in polish remover and gently swipe around your cuticles to neaten the edges of your manicure. An angled brush will give you much more control than a cotton bud and your manicure will look perfect, so don't be worried about making a mistake or two (we always do!)

Finish with a glossy topcoat

The key to this super-reflective manicure is the glossy finish. For a glass-like effect, apply a coat of ultra-shiny topcoat. Now you're ready to dazzle on the dancefloor! This statement manicure complements any outfit; we love it paired with a red dress or more casual denim, with a sparkly eyeshadow look.
