Celebrity interview: Diane von Furstenberg

To celebrate the launch of DIANE, the new DVF fragrance, we chat to Diane von Furstenberg, fashion designer, cosmetics creator and the woman behind the iconic wrap dress.

You're an inspiration to women all over the world. Who's been your biggest inspiration over the years?

My mother was my ultimate role model. She was a huge influence on me, which I have realised more since she passed away. She gave me strength and forced me to be independent.


DIANE fragrance

DIANE, your new fragrance, is described as "effortlessly seductive". Do you have different fragrances for different moods, or do you stick to one signature scent?

I only wear DIANE now, but before it was created I wore Joy by Jean Patou and Christian Dior's Diorissimo.


You've created many a must-have fashion and beauty item over the years. What are your own "won't leave the house without" staples?

A black dress that travels well, a pair of really high heels, a crisp white shirt, a sleek trouser and a beautiful ladylike bag.


What's been your best career moment so far?

The fact that I have created collections that inspire women. Women are number one for me. I could not do what I do without them because it is all about creating to make them feel beautiful and confident. I have always been inspired to empower women, because there are no limits to what an empowered woman can do.

You made the iconic wrap dress famous. What other fashion or beauty creations would you love to see in the future?

I hope to see in the future fashion and beauty products that continue to inspire women and that are inspired by women.


Do you have a definite style or do you like to experiment with new trends and fashions?

I often travel and I love to take photographs and use them to inform my designs and explore possible new trends. I think colour is everything, so that is an important part of all of our prints and my style.

What's next for Diane von Furstenberg?

Gap's children's line is next, and we will have another beautiful, light summer scent next year!
