S/S 2010: The Hair & Make Up Trends

Keep on-trend with our spring/summer 2010 hair and make up report!

The make up, the hair, the products! Hot from the runway, our pick of the most wearable spring beauty trends starts here.

From baby-fresh skin to jewel-toned eyeshadow, with a little beachy-cool hair thrown in, we've got the S/S 2010 beauty trends covered. Welcome to the new season.

Skin is... fresh-faced and luminous

And by fresh-faced, we mean cleverly made up to appear so because, hey, how many of us are models in real life? Spotted at Stella McCartney and Balmain, there's a trick to mastering this no-make-up-make-up look: your hands. "Rather than using fancy tools, use your fingers when applying foundation," explains Charlotte Tilbury, Myface Creative Director. "You'll get quick coverage whilst gently warming the product, so it's more like your skin and sits beautifully without clogging." And don't forget to define your eyes. "A flawless complexion is key, but it's also about creating a defined eye," says Charlotte who recommends applying a chocolate brown eyeshadow along top and bottom lashes and into the eye socket. Finally, "apply a natural shade of blusher to add a healthy hint of colour to the apple of your cheek," says Charlotte.

Eyes are... colourful

Adorning your eyes with colour – whether rich, jewel-toned shades such as the gleaming greens at Issa, or the pretty pastels as seen at Versace and Dior – is a must this spring. "Come summer, heavy browns and charcoal greys look muddy and stale on the skin, so for summer nights out add freshness to your make up by injecting colour onto your lid," says Max Factor make up guru Caroline Barnes. "Jewel-toned eyes instantly 'summer up' a smoky eye – go for any bright colours and tone down with a brown, black or grey. I love Ultra Aqua in the Max Factor Earth Spirits range (available in store)."

Lips are...sheer

While lipstick was clearly evident at the shows, we spotted an easier, effortless look emerge, featuring balm textures and glosses at shows like Moschino Cheap & Chic and DSquared. "It's all about lovely washes of colour – sheer, glossy reds, fuchsia and corals, even milky violets," says top make up artist and Revlon's Global Artistic Director, Gucci Westman, who suggests using Revlon's new Super Lustrous Lipgloss. "Sheerer gloss shades are great during the day. If you want to add more intensity to them, dab on a similar lipstick shade under the lighter gloss, but always make sure your lips aren't chapped," says Gucci.

Hair is... soft and worn down with beachy-fresh waves

Loose, haphazard waves have been a S/S catwalk staple for seasons now. The difference this spring? A freshly washed softness – as seen at Blumarine, Chloe and Pucci. "Soft, beach waves never go out of style, and are easy to create both at home, or whilst on holiday," says Angelo Seminara, Creative Director of Trevor Sorbie. "For a soft, super-natural undone look, apply Trevor Sorbie Beautiful Curls Beach Hair to sections of dry hair, massage in gently and tip your head upside down and scrunch."

...or textured and worn up

Pretty with a sprinkling of attitude, the textured updo, as seen at Lanvin, is a great alternative to loose, soft waves. "It has a thoroughly modern feel, with its light, flyaway texture and great height on top of the head," says top stylist and Wellaflex Silvikrin Style Director, Zoe Irwin. "It also works perfectly with the bold structured shapes in fashion at the moment." Getting the look is surprisingly simple. Start by dividing the hair into two parts. "At the crown, pull the front section of the hair forward then pin up the back section of the hair," says Zoe. "Push forward the front section to create a loose quiff and lightly mist with Wellaflex Hydrostyle Hairspray for added texture and staying power."

And finally, it's good news for blondes

Yes, this season blonde is officially the colour to be – brunettes and redheads, look away now. "The big trend in hair colour for spring/summer '10 is lighter tones and softer shades of blonde," says Clairol Creative Colour Director and backstage guru, Duffy. Of course, it comes with a dose of common sense. "It doesn't mean that everyone should run out and buy a 'light blonde' home hair colour kit – not all of us are meant to be blonde," he warns. "Take your own spin on this season's trend by lifting your base colour a few shades lighter – two to three shades is a good general guide – it will lean towards the style without being too drastic."
