Mascara Mysteries Solved!

Learn how you can make magic with the wave of a wand simply by selecting the right mascara. We help you beat the bafflement when it comes to your lash weapon of choice.

The mascara market is bursting with a variety of goodies all promising to coat, curl, maximise and lengthen your lashes to within an inch of their lives. With so much choice, how do you pick the product that's right for you? We've drafted in Cassie Lomas, make up artist for Bourjois, and Ella Bradley, make up artist for Revlon, to help defuse those mascara dilemmas.

Models Own Ultra Waterproof Mascara

Mascara mystery #1: Waterproof mascara

The expert: Ella Bradley

The lowdown: Waterproof mascaras are resistant to smearing, sweat, tears and rain.

It's for you if: You work in wet or humid conditions or are prone to hot flushes and facial perspiration.

Ella's application tip: Use a waterproof mascara with care; if you accidentally get some on your lids or skin it can be quite tricky to remove, especially if the rest of your make up has already been applied.

Mascara mystery #2: Lengthening mascara

The expert: Cassie Lomas

The lowdown: Lengthening mascaras contain tiny fibres that cling to your lashes and help to create the appearance of extra length.

It's for you if: Your lashes need a little extra help.

Cassie's tip: Avoid using lengthening mascaras in extreme weathers as they may be prone to flaking.

Rimmel Lash Accelerator Mascara

Mascara mystery #3: Growth-promoting mascara

The expert: Ella Bradley

The lowdown: Growth promoting mascaras help care for lashes by helping to strengthen and protect them.

It's for you if: You have fine, weak lashes that are prone to breakage.

Ella's application tip: Apply growth-promoting mascaras gently because repeated force and friction can damage lashes.

Our fave growth-promoting mascaras:

Clinique High Impact Curling Mascara

Mascara mystery #4: Curling and volumising mascara

The expert: Cassie Lomas

The lowdown: Volumising mascaras are great to fatten and coat lashes. Curling mascaras are great to bend and scaffold the lashes.

It's for you if: You want to give your lashes a bit of extra "oomph".

Cassie's application tip: Always curl lashes first and remember not to coat them with too much mascara as the weight will pull them down.
