Boots make up how-to: Find your perfect eye shadow shades

Earth tones or acid brights? Pastels or burnished metallics? If you've ever found yourself lost in a sea of eyeshadow colours, this is the guide for you. We've enlisted the beauty expertise of make up artist Emma Day, who has worked with Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Jaime Winstone, to give us the lowdown on eye-perfecting colours.

Dior 5 Couleurs Palette in Garden Roses

Brown Eyes

Brown-eyed girls got lucky in the colour department; there aren't many shades that they can't get away with. Even pastels are flattering. "Pinks can look incredible with brown eyes," says Emma. "I love Dior's 5 Couleur Palette in Garden Roses." Feel like your dark eyes fail to make an impact? A classic smoky eye with intense charcoal shades can make a bold statement. "With lashings of black eyeliner and mascara you can play up your eyes to look like deep pools of sumptuous chocolate," says Emma.

Estee Lauder Eyeshadow Duo

Blue Eyes

Blessed with a pair of dreamy blue eyes? Don't be afraid to play with non-neutral shades - especially violet and lilac hues. "I love a soft purple colour on a blue eye as it really brings out the colour - it also works beautifully as an alternative to black for a soft smoky eye," reveals Emma. Call on deep metallic tones like taupe and bronze to illuminate your eye colour in the evening. "I love Chanel Taupe Grise eyeshadow and Estee Lauder Eyeshadow Duo in Raisins, a wine hue with a gold highlight shade, which can look great on blue eyes," says Emma.

CHANEL Les 4 Ombres Quadra Palette in Eclosion

Green Eyes

Rich tones of chocolate and gold work wonders to complement green eyes. "Often, there are yellow flecks in green eyes, and a palette of browns and golds can intensify the colour," reveals Emma. "CHANEL Les 4 Ombres Quadra Palette in Eclosion is perfect for green eyes." Soft shades of copper and peach can also liven up your complexion for a healthy looking glow in the day.

Clarins Single Eye-Colour in Icy Turquoise

Hazel Eyes

Hazel eyes are naturally striking but it can be tricky to find shades to boost your colour. Try an on-trend jade green to really make your eyes pop. "I suggest Clarins Single Eye-Colour in Icy Turquoise (shade available in selected stores) - it's a really pretty pastel green for spring," says Emma. Experiment with sumptuous shades of forest green to create a dark and sultry look. "A dark green can look stunning on hazel eyes. Finish off with a dab of silver in the corner of the eyes to make them sparkle."
