Information & Advice
From delicate blush to punchy lip colours (with a smattering of Seventies and Eighties references in between), there are plenty of flattering beauty looks to start practising this autumn. Here's what you need to know about the new make up trends for autumn/winter 09:
Sooty, smoky, precise, defined. From glamorous flicks at Louis Vuitton
and Dolce
& Gabbana to attitude-laden kohl at Lagerfeld and grease paint
lids at Dsquared, there were plenty of black eye incarnations on the
autumn runway. Expert tip: "Use a cotton bud dipped in foundation to
cover mistakes – it's easier than wiping it all off and starting again,"
says Caroline Barnes, Max
Factor Make Up Artist.

Call it an economic backlash, but a bright new mood for lips emerged
this season. Vivid shades of fuchsia, red, hot pink and purple adorned
lips at shows like Alberta Ferretti, Giles and Antonio Beradi. Wary of
statement lips? "Try applying your lipstick as a soft stain," says
backstage make up artist and myface
Creative Director, Charlotte Tilbury. "Pat on using your finger, dab a
tissue to your lips after the first lipstick application and then
reapply a second time to make the colour last and last."

This season's make up palette is awash with gleaming flesh-coloured
tones and glamazonian, monochrome shades, as seen at Chloe and
Allesandro Dell'Acqua: coppers, apricots, ochres, bronzes and taupes,
designed to sculpt and contour. "To translate this trend for every day,
use a neutral tone bronzer and apply right under the cheekbones, along
the temples and sides of the nose," says Charlotte, who created the look
at Chloe. "Next, use a highlighter palette like myface
Solar Sisters to highlight the top of the cheekbones, inner corner of
eyes, down the centre of the nose and the bow of the lip."

When not contoured with taupes and skin-coloured shades, cheeks
blossomed with a whisper of blush. Merely a gentle wash of colour, make
up artists like Pat McGrath opted for cream blushers for the ultimate
real-skin effect. "Apply using your fingertips, dotting colour on cheek
apples," says Barnes, who recommends Max
Factor Miracle
Touch Creamy Blush. "Use the warmth of your fingertips to melt the
colour into your skin, working in semicircles until the colour blends
in."

Make up is structured and deliberate this autumn which means one thing:
quality tools. "It's not finger make up, it's brush make up," says
Charlotte. In particular, autumn's contoured faces demand a more
professional approach. "The more blending you can do on contours, the
less literally Eighties they'll be. Use brushes and don't buy cheap, buy
well," says backstage make up pro Val Garland.
