What is a DNA test for paternity?

DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) is a chemical substance found in most cells in the human body. Half of each person’s DNA comes from their mother and the other half from their father. By comparing DNA from the mother, child and father, it is possible to establish whether an alleged father is the father of a child with a probability of paternity routinely in excess of 99.99%. Many parents, children and families find peace of mind from undertaking a DNA test for paternity.

Who can consent for the test to take place?

To avoid motherless testing, the assuredna test has been designed for mother, child and father. Each participant will need to consent for their DNA to be tested and will need to support this with a copy of identification.

What Identification will be required?

Everyone being tested will need to provide a photocopy of identification in order to check their identity. These include:

For Mother,Father and children over 16 years, photocopy of one of the following:

  • Full passport
  • UK driving licence (full)
  • Front and rear of a bank card

For children under 16 years, photocopy of one of the following:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Photograph signed and dated by mother

Who will receive the results?

The results will be given to the person nominated on the Consent Form, for whom everyone tested has given consent and other authorised persons where appropriate.

Gently shake the swab in the air for a few seconds to dry.

Step 4

Place the used pink swab into the mother's pink sample collection envelope.

Step 5

Remove the second pink swab from the packet and repeat steps 3 - 4 and seal the mother's pink collection envelope.

Step 6

Next, complete steps 1- 5 for the child using the child's yellow swabs and the yellow sample collection envelope.

Step 7

Complete the sampling by repeating steps 1 - 5 for the father, this time using the father's blue swabs and blue sample collection envelope.
